Welcome to INFS1200/7900. This course will be your first introduction to databases and information systems. As most of you will be aware, computer based information systems are overwhelmingly found all around us in almost every domain. Correct database design, and effective data management form to a large extent, the foundation for the success (or failure) of an information system. The database community is very significant both in academia and industry. It consists of large industry/vendors like Oracle www.oracle.com , DB2 (IBM) www.ibm.com/db2, SQLServer (Microsoft) www.microsoft.com/sql . This community is also privileged to have some of the top researchers and scientists in computer science. You will find a database group in almost all IT/CS schools in the top universities around the world. The School of ITEE, UQ also has a Data and Knowledge Engineering Group (see www.itee.uq.edu.au/~dke ). The School of ITEE provides further advanced courses on databases, which some of you may choose to take later (see INFS courses). As such, consider INFS1200/7900 to be your induction into the community of database users, designers and experts!
