General conditions of use
School-funded printing and photocopying is only to be used for School-related activities. Use for any other purpose, including private purposes, constitutes a breach of this guideline. Students may be asked by a staff member to show what is being copied or printed. Refusal to do so also constitutes a breach of this guideline. Those found to be breaching the guideline may have their privileges immediately suspended and be dealt with under the University's Student Misconduct statute.
All guidelines referred to in this statement are displayed next to printers and copiers.
Printing quotas
Coursework students enrolled in the School are eligible to use School printers for their work, in accordance with the School's guideline on Usage Conditions for Computing Laboratories and Facilities.
From semester 2, 2003 a start-up computer print quota of five pages per ITEE-enrolled course will be given to each student with an account on the ITEE student network. Extra print quota may be purchased by students from print kiosks in the School.
The start-up quota is provided to enable students to print course profiles, should they choose to do so. Course profiles average up to 10 pages and ITEE printers allow students to print two pages to a sheet. (To do this, open the course profile, choose File→Print→Preferences→Pages per Sheet→2.)
Unused start-up quota amounts will expire at the end of each semester. Extra print quota purchased will carry over for as long as the student has a valid ITEE student network account. Unused quota will not be refunded.
Photocopying quotas
Higher degree research students (MPhil, PhD) are allocated a certain number of pages of photocopying on School copiers. Copying is allowed only for School-related activities.
Presently, students enrolled in a research postgraduate program with ITEE receive a quota of 1,000 copies per semester.
Unused portions of the quotas are not carried forward. New quotas apply from the start of each semester.
Copyright
What is copyright?
Copyright is a type of personal property right that is founded on a person's creative work. It is designed to prevent the unauthorised use by others of a creative work. The Copyright Act 1968 gives exclusive rights to copyright owners (such as authors or publishers) as to how their material may be used. These rights include the right to copy, publish, broadcast and publicly perform the copyright material.
What is covered by the Copyright Act?
The Copyright Act protects original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works:
- Literary works - include letters, articles, novels, poetry, song lyrics, timetables, databases and computer programs. Single words, slogans or titles are not usually protected as literary works.
- Artistic works - include paintings, photographs, sculptures, engravings, sketches, blueprints, drawings, plans, maps and buildings or models of buildings,
- Subject-matter other than works - include sound recordings, films (which include videos), radio and television broadcasts and published editions of works.
How much may I copy?
What amounts to a fair dealing is a matter to be determined on the facts of each case. In the case of copying for the purposes of research or study, the Copyright Act specifically provides that it is fair dealing to make a single copy of a journal article, or one chapter, or 10% of a book of ten or more pages (whichever is greater). This is known as the reasonable portion test.
Further information can be found at: http://www.library.uq.edu.au/copyright/.
How do I purchase extra print/copy quota?
Following an assessment of costs associated with copying and printing, the School has determined that additional pages may be purchased at the rate of 11 cents per page for printing and 20 cents per page for photocopying.
The minimum unit of purchase for photocopying is 50 sheets, i.e., $10.00. There is no minimum unit of purchase for printing.
Costs are inclusive of GST.
Students wishing to purchase additional units will need to:
For Photocopying:
- get an Income Deposit Form from the School Office (Level 2, GPS),
- pay for the additional photocopying quota at the Cashier on Level 1, JD Story Building,
- return to the School Office and have your receipt sighted by a member of the office staff,
- the additional 'credit' will be added to your account -- allow 24hrs for this to be processed.
For Printing:
- use one of the ITEE 'Print Kiosks' at the following locations - level 1 GP South on the door next to the Photocopier (coins only), level 2 GP South outside ITEE's main office (room 217 - notes and coins), the foyer on level 1 Axon (coins only),
- follow the directions on the 'Print Kiosk How-To' card,
- the kiosks accept notes and coins.
Extra print quota purchased will carry over for as long as the student has a valid ITEE student network account. Unused quota will not be refunded.
Purchasing print quota with a $5, $10, $20, $50, or $100 note will attract a ten percent bonus.
Students are advised that other printing and photocopying services are provided on campus that may be more attractive cost-wise. Printing and photocopying is available from University of Queensland Libraries (currently 11 cents per page, including GST) and Uni Copying Services in the Student Union complex at St Lucia (currently 10 cents per page for the first 100 pages, then 9 cents per page thereafter, including GST).
This guideline is issued under the authority of the Head of School.
