Karl Bertling is a research fellow with the photonics group at the School of ITEE. He has considerable experience in high-speed RF instrumentation and characterisation of semiconductor transistors. He is also an expert on instrument automation and self-mixing laser sensor research. He completed a BE(Electrical) and a BSc(Physics) at UQ in 2003. In 2006 he was awarded a MPhil for the work on the Use of lasers for the cultivation of photosynthetic bacteria (also UQ) and in 2012 was awarded a PhD for his work on Microwave characterisation and parameters extraction of silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) MOSFET's for device and circuit modelling (at UQ).

Research Interests
  • Laser Sensors utilising the self-mixing effect with visible, near-IR, mid-IR and terahertz semiconductor lasers
  • Characterisation and identification of materials at mid-IR and terahertz frequencies.
  • RF Characterisation of high speed MOSFETs and semiconductor lasers.
