2013 UQ ECR Winner Dr Surya Singh

Dr Surya Singh

In 2013 Dr Surya Singh won a UQ Early Career Researcher grant for his project Flexible Needle Steering for Deep Targeting in Next-Generation Deep Brain Stimulation Procedures. His research will consider how to steer flexible needles to new depths in neurosurgery. The goal of this project is to use brain biopotenials along with adaptive mechanical models and motion correction algorithms to provide “superresolution.” Its outcomes will aid the design of next-generation needles and probes. Together, this will provide accuracy and control around critical tissue. Clinically, it would reduce complications and increases accessibility leading to better outcomes for more patients. The grant is significant because this was an extremely competitive round, with only five awarded from within the faculty.
