School of
Information Technology and Electrical Engineering

There are a number of changes the the B.Engineering(Hons) plan rules and course offerings that take effect over the period from 2017-2019. It is expected that these changes will have minimal effect on most current students.

You can view changes to plan rules on the courses and programs website at https://www.uq.edu.au/study/program.html?acad_prog=2342 . To view the new rules taking effect from 2017:

  1. Choose “2017” from the drop-down box in the top right hand corner
  2. Click “what you can study” and then select your major from the list
  3. Select “course list”

You can similarly view the pre-2017 rules by selecting your year of commencement from the drop-down box in step (a). Students who enrolled in their current program prior to 2015 (i.e. are enrolled in the B.Engineering rather than B.Engineering(Hons)), need to navigate from https://www.uq.edu.au/study/program.html?acad_prog=2001&year=2014

You should also visit http://www.itee.uq.edu.au/engineering-students-academic-advice which has a variety of academic advising resources, including “mudmaps” to help you plan your studies.

1. Changes to Year 1 of the BE(hons) in all ITEE plans from 2017:

From 2017, all ITEE engineering plan rules now have the following options for year 1:

  • Students can now choose to complete either MATH1051 OR MATH1071 (the “Advanced” version of the same course). Current students who have not completed MATH1051 can take either course.
  • Students can now choose to complete either MATH1052 OR MATH1072 (the “Advanced” version of the same course). Current students who have not completed MATH1052 can take either course.
  • In the past, students have bee required to complete ENGG1100 AND ENGG1200 (semester 1 and 2 respectively). Students now also have the option of completing the #4 ENGG1211 which is offered over semester 2 and summer semester. Current students who have not taken any of ENGG1100 or ENGG1200 may alternatively complete ENGG1211.

2. Changes to ITEE Course Offerings:

The following changes will take effect over the period 2017-2019:

  • Team Project II (currently ENGG4810) is currently recommended to be completed in Semester 1 of fourth year. This will move to Semester 2 of third year. The course code will change from ENGG4810 to ENGG3800.
  • ENGG4810 will be offered as usual in semester 1 of 2017; and then for the last time in Semester 1 of 2018.
  • ENGG3800 will be offered for the first time in Semester 2 of 2018; and will then continue to be offered every year in Semester 2.

These courses are considered to be equivalent, and current students can choose to complete either a ENGG4810 offering (in 2017 or 2018) or an ENGG3800 offering (in 2018 onwards).

As per standard process, weighted GPA calculations (and therefore calculations for Honors) will use the first numeral of the course code. This means that:

  • If you complete ENGG4810, it will count as a 4th year course to your weighted GPA calculation.
  • If you complete ENGG3800 it will count as a 3rd year course to your weighted GPA calculation.
  • ENGG2800 will continue to be offered in Semester 2 only in 2017 and 2018. From 2019, it will be offered in both semesters
  • ELEC3300 will move from Semester 1 to Semester 2 in 2018. i.e.:
  • ELEC3300 will be offered in semester 1 of 2017
  • ELEC3300 will then be offered in semester 2 or 2018; and henceforth in Semester 2 of future years
  • CSSE3100 (Reasoning About Programs) will be offered for the first time in Semester 1, 2017.
  • ENGG4000 will be offered for the last time in Semester 1 of 2017.
  • ENGG4020 will be offered for the last time in Semester 2 of 2017.
  • CSSE4603 has been discontinued and will no longer be offered.
  • From 2016, The pre-requisites for METR4202 are now METR4201 OR ELEC3004 to reflect the differing backgrounds of electrical, mechatronic and mechanical engineering students who may take this course.

There are a number of reasons for these changes:

  • Feedback from both Students and Academics is this it is desirable to avoid concurrent enrolment in Team Project II and Thesis.
  • To better balance the compulsory course loadings across semesters in Years 3 and 4 of the Electrical Engineering program.
  • Provide flexibility to facilitate students commencing their studies in July rather than March.
  • Updating elective options to reflect industry relevance, student demand and staff expertise.
  • Alignment with a preferred Faculty of EAIT program structure.

3. Electrical Engineering:

All changes in (1) and (2) apply.

4. Electrical and Computer Engineering:

All changes in (1) and (2) apply. In addition, COMP4702 has been added to the part B electives list.

5. Electrical and Biomedical Engineering:

All changes in (1) and (2) apply.

In addition there has been a significant change to the structure of the program for students entering the program from 2017 onwards (https://www.uq.edu.au/study/plan_display.html?acad_plan=ELBIOW2342). Current students can choose to continue their program under their current rules (which also satisfy the new rules); or to adopt the new rules.

Further details are also provided here.

6. Software Engineering:

All changes in (1) and (2) apply.

7. Mechatronic Engineering:

All changes in (1) and (2) apply. At this stage there are no scheduled changes to the mechatronics team project courses (METR2800, METR4810).
