The Transcription Acceleration Project (TAP) is a Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language (CoEDL) cross-disciplinary project aimed at identifying the workflow of linguists during transcription, and developing assistive tools to accelerate that process.

While Australia has a rich linguistic background, the majority of australian languages are now endangered. Linguists are loosing the race to document these languages before they disappear. Transcription is part of the language documentation process, and is one of the most time-consuming and tedious of all.

The project involves technology experts based at the University of Queensland and linguists across all CoEDL’s other university nodes (at the Australian National University, the Western Sydney University and the University of Melbourne). The project comprises research to understand transcription practices and the development of technologies (such as speech recognition) to assist them.
