Abstract: 

In recent years, the University of Wollongong has undergone a Curriculum transformation project, aimed at critical review of existing programs, establishment of best practice teaching guidelines and the incorporation of teaching innovations within our programs.

Following a pivotal merger of the Faculties of Engineering and Informatics in 2012, the Engineering programs at UOW underwent a multiple-school consultation process to build a new common first year program for all Engineering majors.  Education pedagogy was employed to establish clear First-Year Learning Outcomes (FYLOs) and identify threshold concepts and essential skills.

Of particular priority was the move towards significant online engagement and the inclusion of Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL).  One subject in particular, was created from scratch and implemented using a flipped classroom approach to engage students in the practice of programming and dynamics.  In the flipped classroom approach, students spend only 1 hour a week in a plenary lecture, but must perform other weekly tasks - such as watching videos and completing online quizzes and participating 4 hours a week in laboratory classrooms.

Student experience surveys show improvement in overall student satisfaction, and current performance indicators in later-year subjects show improvements in areas such as programming ability.

Biography: 

Dr Montserrat Ros is a Senior Lecturer with the School of Electrical, Computer & Telecommunications Engineering and Academic Program Director for the Engineering Common First Year.  Montse obtained her Ph.D. in Computer Systems Engineering in 2007 from the University of Queensland and her research interests include Embedded Systems, Sensor Networks Data Fusion, Cyber-physical Systems, Localisation and Engineering Education.  Montse has published over 70 scientific papers in both journal and conference proceedings and has attracted over $460,000 in grant funding for a variety of projects in research, teaching and outreach.

Montse is the Secretary of the NSW Chapter of the IEEE Education Society and a member of the Executive Committee of the Wollongong Academy of Tertiary Teaching and Learning Excellence (WATTLE). Montse has won four UOW Vice-Chancellors awards for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning (x2); Interdisciplinary Research Excellence; and Community Engagement; and was named a UOW 2016 Woman of Impact for inspiring the young STEM generation.
