The growth in Queensland's aviation and aerospace industries continues to outpace the rest of Australia with the development of aviation sectors in the South-East and at Townsville and Cairns. Major players such as Boeing, Virgin Blue and Qantas have located operations in Queensland, and the State Government is planning a major aerospace business park near the Amberley RAAF base near Ipswich. The world's first successful scramjet launch was conducted by UQ researchers. Aerospace is a global business, so graduates can take their skills overseas as well.
What will I study?
Aerospace is taken as a double major and is available in the fields of avionics (electrical systems), software systems, and mechancial engineering.
Electrical & Aerospace
This program combines a full single major in Electrical Engineering with additional specialist study and project work in the aerospace and aviation industry. It prepares students to design cutting-edge electronics products for the aviation industry, and also with all the skills to service other parts of the information and communication technologies industries. Strong emphasis is given to practical, hands-on experience with high-technology equipment. You can view the attributes our graduates can expect to acquire here.
Software Systems & Aerospace
This program combines a full single major in Software Engineering with additional specialist study and project work in the aerospace and aviation industry. In the aerospace industry, systems such as aircraft are a mixture of electronics, software and mechanical devices that need to operate at exceptional levels of safety and reliability. This program includes a strong component of systems engineering which allows designers to describe and understand such complex systems. You can view the attributes our graduates can expect to acquire here.
Mechanical & Aerospace
This program combines a full single major in Mechanical Engineering with additional specialist study and project work in the aerospace industry. It is an expansion of the Mechanical and Space Engineering program that has been offered at UQ for the last 15 years.
Where will I work?
The Aerospace double majors equip students to work as engineers in the aerospace industries - airlines, defence, airports, and aircraft manufacture. Students are also equipped to work in traditional electrical, mechanical or software engineering, depending on which double major they have completed.
What can I combine with my double major?
At any stage of the program students can revert to a single major in electrical, mechanical or software engineering.
