 Facilities - Biomedical Engineering

Extensive access to a multitude of well equipped laboratories at the University of Queensland ensures that we provide high-quality research and teaching in Biomedical Engineering.

The Biomedical Engineering research facilities are fully integrated into ITEE's (School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering) computer network.  As one of the largest academic high-speed computer networks in Australia, it provides exceptional resources for complex computation and analysis. In addition, the outstanding clinical and surgical facilities of the Veterinary School are available for Biomedical Engineering student training.

Biomedical Engineering-dedicated laboratories within ITEE are outfitted with electronics equipment, physiological instrumentation, data processing hardware and software, and a machine shop.  The electronics apparatus includes multilayer printed circuit board and sterilisable electronic device fabrication facilities.  The physiological instrumentation includes devices for ultrasonography, Electrocardiography (ECG), electro-surgery, respiratory inductive plethysmography (RIP), and intensive care monitors.

Biomedical Engineering students and researchers can also work with instrumentation and labs in other UQ departments such as,

·          Biomechanics labs (School of Human Movement Studies),

·          Physiological Instrumentation Lab (School of ITEE),

·          NMR/MRI labs (Centre for Magnetic Resonance),

·          Electromagnetic-shielded chambers for low-level biological measurements (Department of Physiotherapy),

·          X-ray labs (School of Veterinary Science),

·          Electron microscopy labs (Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis), and

·          On-site laboratories at major hospitals in Brisbane.
