Research Report - 1999/2000

Welcome

On the 1 November 1997, two separate University of Queensland departments - Information Technology and Electrical Engineering - were merged to create a new unified research and teaching entity - the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE). The combined strengths of these two departments with their outstanding research achievements, laid the common foundation for further innovative research. The past few years have already shown exciting developments and growth due to the merger. ITEE is one of the largest research organizations in Australia focussing on cutting edge information and communications technology and engineering, and supporting technologies in electronics and electrical energy.

Research Centres and Groups

ITEE has a solid research focus in a number of internationally important fields: communications, software engineering, intelligent systems, algorithm design, energy systems, micro-electronics, information environments, and information and distributed systems. Furthermore, the department is associated with a number of major research centres:

  • The Queensland node for the Cooperative Research Centre for Sensor, Signal and Information Processing (CSSIP)
  • The headquarters for the Cooperative Research Centre in Distributed Systems Technology (DSTC)
  • Australian Research Council's Special Research Centre on Software Verification (SVRC)
  • The University of Queensland Centre for Software Maintenance (CSM)
  • The University of Queensland Centre for Discrete Mathematics and Computing (CDMC)

Postgraduates

ITEE is one of Australia's largest postgraduate research schools in the computer science and electrical engineering field, with 145 research masters and PhD students currently enrolled. Our research students have an excellent record of success. In 1998-99, there were 41 research masters and PhD degrees awarded.

Personnel

ITEE has a strong complement of 50 academic staff and 20 senior research personnel. Their expertise and experience guides our large postgraduate school as well as substantial research staff numbering around 50 people. Emeritus Professors and former staff, Honorary Research Consultants, also continue to contribute to ITEE research which is ably supported by 30 adminis- trative and technical staff. The department is also interested in establishing strong contacts with industry, for example, having appointed eight Adjunct Professors.

Facilities

ITEE research facilities reflect current and state-of-the-art technologies, from sophisticated personal computer systems to specialized research equip- ment and software. Staff and research students have unlimited internet access. The department is the proud occupant of one of The University of Queensland's newest buildings which is equipped throughout with ATM networking. Furthermore, The University of Queensland boasts one of Australia's largest libraries which is equipped with leading edge electronic cataloguing, document retrieval and lending facilities.

World Class Research

The University of Queensland is Australia's largest provider of industry- funded research and development expertise, and ITEE plays an important role in contributing to that strong reputation. In the following pages, many projects described are sponsored by such high-profile organizations as:

  • Australian Defence Science & Technology Organization (DSTO)
  • ABB
  • British Aerospace Australia
  • D A R P A
  • GEC-Alsthom
  • N A S A
  • Oracle Corporation
  • Software Engineering Australia

ITEE's research is similarly highly-regarded by academic peers. In 1998 a total of 153 refereed research papers were published, and in 1996, an inde- pendent survey rated The University of Queensland's research output in information and communications technology as the highest among Australia's research institutions.

Welcome Researchers!

ITEE welcomes visiting academics and researchers for sabbatical visits, seminar presentations and informal discussions. Our department similarly encourages international research students to consider attending as short-term visiting scholars. Sabbatical visitors are appointed as Visiting Fellows of the University, enjoying the same privileges as our research staff including: library access, office space and dedicated computer workstations. Additional specialist facilities can be arranged via the relevant research group or centre. The University of Queensland is located in the inner Brisbane suburb of St Lucia, only 10 minutes drive to the city centre. Brisbane, with a population of over 1 million, is the sub-tropical capital of the state of Queensland, Australia's "Sunshine State". Brisbane abounds with cultural and recreational facilities, and world-class beach and "bush" resorts are within 1-2 hour's drive.
