Brief Bio

Prof. Neil Bergmann has worked in the area of computer architecture for approximately 21 years since commencing his PhD studies at University of Edinburgh in 1981.   During his PhD studies, completed in 1984, he worked in the area of VLSI CAD tools, including coding of the F.I.R.S.T. silicon compiler, a specialist silicon compiler for signal processing algorithms.  His current research interests are in VLSI architectures to support digital audio, image and video processing, and in recent years his work has concentrated on reconfigurable computing architectures and embedded systems.

Prof. Bergmann has received numerous research grants to support his work including an ARC Pilot Project grant, ARC Large grants, ARC Small grants, an ARC REIF (Infrastructure) grant, and ARC SPIRT grant, ATERB grants, CSIRO/University grant, QUT Development grant, and State Government Collaborative Industry Venture grant.  Total grant income is over $1 million.

He commenced his academic career at University of Queensland, and then moved to the CSIRO/Flinders University Joint Research Centre, a collaborative venture which predated the establishment of CRCs.  During this time, he continued his computer architecture work, but also developed skills in technology to support electronically-mediated collaboration between remote users.

1995-2001, he worked in the School of Electrical and Electronic Systems Engineering at QUT.  While at QUT he was director of the Space Industry Development Centre at QUT, and a project leader for the High Performance Computing project within the CRC for Satellite Systems.

From July 2001 he has been Professor of Embedded Systems at The University of Queensland.  He has teaching experience across a wide range of fields from electromagnetics and semiconductor physics through to computer operating systems, neural networks and VLSI Circuits and Systems.

Prof. Bergmann is a national board member and the membership committee chair of the ITEE (Information Technology and Electronic Engineering) society of the Institution of Engineers Australia.  He is a reviewer for international journals such as IEE Transactions, IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computing and IEE Letters as well as Technical Program Committee member for many local and international conferences.  He has been PhD thesis examiner for University of Adelaide, University of NSW, University of Tasmania, University of Queensland, University of SA, Bond University and Monash University, and has been a member of several IEAust degree accreditation visit teams.
