CSSE4000 - Digital System Design II

+++

Semester 2, 2006

CSSE4000 is the follow on of CSSE2000 and CSSE3000 - Digital System Design I. It covers advanced issues in modern design of digital systems. It concentrates on two very important trends in system design; the circuit design of very high performance Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) circuits and quick prototyping of digital systems with Field Programmable Gate Arrays and synthesis tools from VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language). VLSI circuits are treated with much more depth than in CSSE3000; layout, fabrication, interconnection issues, static and dynamic CMOS design, memory circuits are presented and analysed. Issues in design of modern high speed submicron VLSI circuits are also presented with emphasis on practical aspects of both circuit and system design. Field Programmable technology is reviewed and design with simulation and synthesis is covered in much detail. Principles of CAD tools used for simulation, synthesis, placement and routing are presented. Two projects provide hands on experience with sophisticated industrial design tools both for VLSI and VHDL.
