 Adding Network Printers to Windows/NT
To add a new network printer to Windows/NT (version 4 or later), from the start menu choose Settings and Printers. Under the File menu, choose "Server Properties", then Ports. Click on "Add Port", select "LPR Port", and click on "New Port". Enter the name of the server (e.g. "oboe") in the top box, in LOWER CASE. (Note: Windows/NT will later display the server in upper case, but this is wrong). Similarly, the name of the printer should be in lower case (e.g. "hp7").

Now the computer has a new logical port. Double click on "Add Printer" to start the Add Printer Wizard. Despite the fact that you want a network printer, do NOT choose "Network Printer Server" (this is for MS Network servers only). Instead, choose "My Computer". The next screen should have the new port that you set up above; choose that port. After that, just follow the instructions. If the driver is new, you will need the Windows/NT install CD Rom.

If you get the port wrong, none of the documents will print, and they will stay in the queue (double click the icon for the printer). After a short time, the status of the document will change from "Spooling" to "Printer error", and it will just stay there. Remove the document from the queue, delete the new printer, delete the port, and add it again.
