Abstract:
The emergence of mobile and embedded computing devices and the progress in wireless communication technologies instigated research on pervasive systems, i.e. systems which (i) provide seamless computing infrastructure for user computing applications allowing user mobility and user independence of computing devices and computer networks, and (ii) can intelligently support users in a range of tasks. Such systems are built as context-aware systems - they can capture some information about the computational context of an applications and adapt the application and/or the whole computing system when the context changes.
In this seminar I will discuss our progress in research on pervasive systems. My talk will start with a general introduction to pervasive/ubiquitous, context-aware systems. This will be followed by a description of issues we have been researching for the last few years (context modelling and management, adaptation to context changes, programming context-aware applications, service discovery, etc) and the outcomes of this research. I will also indicate the challenges lying ahead.
