Reconfigurable Computing
Much of this research is conducted on Xilinx Virtex2-1000 FPGA development boards from Insight Electronics.We have the full range of Xilinx design software including the ISE synthesis tools, EDK (Embedded Development Kit), ChipScope Pro and other tools. ModelSim from ModelTech is available for VHDL simulation and timing analysis.
For ASIC and PCB design we have the Mentor Graphics CAD suite.
Cooperating and context-aware embedded systems
The mobile devices laboratory is equipped with PCs, laptops, PDAS, programmable phones and sensors connected by a variety of networking technologies including Ethernet, WLAN, Bluetooth, and GSM/GPRS.We have our own middleware for context-aware computing including context processing, context management, evaluation of context changes, user preference management, adaptation to context changes, and context programming toolkit which supports programming of context aware applications.
Electronics and PCB prototyping
In our field of research it is frequently necessary to design and build customised hardware.The Engineering Workshop in the Faculty of Engineering, Physical Sciences and Architecture has advanced PCB prototyping facilities that allow us to affordably prototype multilayer printed circuit boards, as well as place components such as high-density BGA packages.
