PetaLogix into final of UQ Business School's Enterprize Competition
submitted by John Williams at 11:17AM Tuesday 30th August 2005
ESG's consulting operation, PetaLogix, is one of eight finalists selected to battle it out for the UQ Business School's Enterprize competition and $100,000 in prize money.

Head of the Business School, Professor Tim Brailsford said the standard was very high with most concept plans addressing the key issues in relation to the commercialisation of their ideas.

“Most entries were extremely thorough in clearly describing the idea, identifying the business opportunity, business model, and commercialisation strategy, and being aware of barriers to entry or other obstacles to be overcome,” he said.

UQ researchers and NASA to develop Linux-based Reconfigurable Spaceflight Computing System
submitted by John Williams at 4:08PM Monday 20th June 2005
Brisbane engineers have teamed up with NASA to help build a new computer system for future space missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond.

The team of electronics engineers from The University of Queensland, led by Dr John Williams, is building the software operating system for the American space agency’s Reconfigurable Scaleable Computing (RSC) project.

RSC principal investigator Dr Robert Hodson said NASA wanted an alternative space computing system to improve processing speed and reduce the expense and time to retest systems for different space missions.

“NASA recognizes UQ as a leader in embedded operating systems for reconfigurable computing and views their contributions to the RSC project as vital to its success,” Dr Hodson said.

The RSC operating system is a modified version of Linux, an open-source alternative to Microsoft Windows or Apple MacOS which is widely used in scientific and academic computing.

Dr Williams has been modifying Linux to run on reconfigurable hardware, and has freely released his work to the public which was how NASA became aware of the UQ group’s expertise.

UQ’s School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering has signed a partnership agreement with NASA’s Langley Research Centre for its four-year RSC project, worth approximately $18 million.

ESG to host Xilinx University Program workshops
submitted by John Williams at 6:56PM Tuesday 9th November 2004
In conjunction with the 2004 International Conference on Field-Programmable Technology, ESG is also hosting a Xilinx University Program Professors' Workshop on Embedded Linux for the Xilinx Microblaze Processor.

Informed by ESG's reconfigurable computing research, the workshop is an introduction to the exciting and potent combination of a fully featured, open source operating system, and the flexibility of Programmable System-on-Chip technology. The workshop is presented by John Williams, one of the developers of the Microblaze uClinux kernel port.

Interested academic staff and research students may register through the Xilinx University Program website.
