Local Information

Conference Venue

Brisbane, the third largest city in Australia, is the capital of the State of Queensland and has a population of more than one million people who enjoy a temperate to subtropical climate all year round. The beautiful The University of Queensland St Lucia Campus is situated on the Brisbane River just 7 km from the city centre and 18 km from the Airport. The University is one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious campuses with over 25,000 students and 2,000 academic staff. Taxis and regular bus and river-boat services connect the campus to the city centre in 15 minutes. All Conference sessions will be held in the Hawken Engineering Building at The University of Queensland St Lucia Campus.

Airport Transfers

COACHTRANS provides coach transfers from Brisbane international and domestic terminals to the Transit Centre in the city centre every 30 minutes at AUD$9.00 per person. A regular train service (the Airtrain) also operates between Brisbane airport and the city (Transit Centre). See www.airtrain.com.au.

Transport

The university bus stop is at [campus map ref.F9]. All buses to and from the university stop here.  The ferry (Citycat) stop is located at [campus map ref. L4]. Local Council buses and taxis are then available to transport delegates to the University St Lucia Campus (15 minutes). A taxi from the city to the University is approximately AUD$20. A taxi fare from the airport to the University is approximately AUD$38.

Benson Court Motel and St Lucia Gardens Motel are located along the river from the University towards the city [see map of city, UQ and Toowong] - close to the suburb of Toowong (where there is a shopping mall and numerous cafes and restaurant's).

Welcome Reception

On Tuesday (5th July) evening (5-7pm) a welcome reception will be held at the UQ Staff and Graduates club (map ref. J9, Staff House building).

This reception is free for all IDEAL'05 registrants. It will also be possible to register and collect your bag/proceedings at this reception.

Conference Sessions

All Conference sessions and the registration (Wed-Fri) will be held in the Hawken Engineering Building (map ref. I11), as will morning and afternoon teas. Lunches will be held at St. Leo's college (map ref. J13).

Conference Dinner

The conference dinner will be held at Vino's Restaurant and Bar (http://www.vinos.com.au). It is possible (and highly recommended) to catch a Citycat (ferry) along the Brisbane river from the university directly to Eagle Street Pier and Vino's.

Social Activity

On Friday (8th) afternoon, there will be a chance to get some fresh air and experience some Australian fauns with a trip to the world's first and largest koala sanctuary - Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary (http://www.koala.net). The cost will be $20 per person (to cover admission and travel) - if you are interested please sign up at the registration desk by Thursday lunchtime.  If we have insufficient numbers to make a group booking, the trip may be cancelled.

International Delegates

Visitors holding passports from countries other than Australia and New Zealand require an entry visa. Visas cannot be purchased on arrival in Australia. Australia’s Electronic Travel Authority system (ETA) is a streamlined travel authorisation system. Details are available at www.immi.gov.au/business/iecn.htm.
 

Climate and Clothing

Australia’s seasons are opposite to the seasons in the Northern Hemisphere. July is Winter time in Brisbane, however the winter is mild and days are often sunny and warm. A hat and sunscreen are recommended for outdoor activities. Dress for the conference, including the Conference dinner, is casual comfortable clothing. Ties and jackets are not necessary. We recommend that you bring a sweater / jacket for the cooler evenings and for the Conference dinner venue.

Insurance

Registration fees do not include insurance of any kind. It is strongly recommended that all delegates take out their own travel and medical insurance prior to coming to the Conference. The policy should include loss of fees/deposit through cancellation of your participation in the Conference, or through cancellation of the Conference itself, loss of airfares for any reason, medical expenses, loss or damage to personal property, additional expenses and repatriation should travel arrangements have to be altered. The Conference Secretariat will not take any responsibility for any participant failing to insure. Please speak to your travel agent or airline in regard to this matter.
