Software Information Systems Major in BInfTech from 2005
The Software Information Systems major has a strong focus on information systems and database technology. These are the systems which run organisations of all kinds. About half of the information technology industry in Australia is in this area. The use of information systems technology to connect organisations together via the Web is making possible worldwide economic development, and also recovery of the information technology industry from its recent recession.
The core introductory course, INFS1200 Information Systems will give you a good idea of what a database system does and how to use it. By following the information systems major, you will learn first what the database management software does and how to administer it (INFS2200 Relational Database Systems), then what effect multiple computers and huge amounts of data have (INFS3200 Advanced Database Systems).
Computing across organisations via the Web on a global scale is covered in two courses: INFS3202 Web Information Systems (how the Web affects information systems) and INFS3204 Service-Oriented Architectures (how organisations can be tied together using information systems technology). How to design an information system so that it will do what it needs to do is covered in INFS3222 Systems Analysis and Design, offered by the School of Business.
All of these courses can be taken in the Software Information Systems major.
Those students continuing to the honours year have two further courses available: INFS4205 Spatial and Multimedia Databases, INFS4203 Data Mining (discovery of patterns and anomalies in large volumes of data, including the Web).
The Software Information Systems major fits well with dual degrees, especially the BBus and BCom offered by the School of Business. The major use of information technology in organizations is for accounting or management applications, and accounting and management techniques rely heavily on information technology.
