SPECIAL SEMINAR
12:00noon, Thursday November 29th
To be held at the Hawken Engineering Bldg #50
Lecture Theatre #3
"Challenges in Scientific Visualisation"
A special seminar to be given by
BERNARD A. PAILTHORPE
Professor of Scientific Computation & Visualisation
Director, Sydney VisLab
and NICOLE S. BORDES, Sydney VisLab
Summary
The frontiers of Scientific Visualisation now include problems arising
with data that scales in size or complexity. New metaphors may be needed
to navigate, analyse and display the data emerging from bio-diversity,
genomic and socio-economic studies. This talk addresses the challenges in
generating algorithms and software libraries which are suitable for the
large scale data emerging from tera-scale simulations and instruments.
With larger and more complex datasets, moving into the 100GB-1TB realm,
scalable methodologies and tools are required. VisLab's development of a
new uniform high-resolution display, driven by a PC-linux cluster will be
discussed. Related room-sized displays can be incorporated into Access
grid nodes facilitating remote collaboration - the VisLab-ATP facility
will be described.
Biography
Pailthorpe founded Sydney VisLab, with Australian Research Council
funding, to support computational and visualisation research. That lab
underpins research and teaching innovations in a broad spectrum of
disciplines. Its recent work has provided visualisation support for
high-resolution weather modeling, specifically in the context of the
Sydney 2000 Olympics. Recently he directed the scientific visualisation
program for NPACI and for SDSC, at UCSD.
