The media equation: moving beyond usability towards affective design
Speaker: Daniel Johnson , CSEE
When: 03.00PM, Tuesday 7 May 2002
Venue: 78-420
Host: Dr Janet Wiles
Abstract:
Usability in software and interface design is an unquestioned
design requirement. Increasingly, researchers interested in human
factors and human-computer interactions are becoming aware of
the value of looking beyond usability. Focus on the emotional
side of computing is becoming increasingly common, not only
with regard to the significance of computers that can recognise
and express emotions affective computing, but also in terms of
computers and interfaces that aim to engender positive affective
states in the user affective design. A series of findings which
show that people often treat media in a social manner have major
implications for these three inter-related goals (usability,
affective design and affective computing).
The media equation states that in many situations media equals
real life. Broadly, the media equation explores the many
ways in which people treat computers in a social and natural
manner. In many situations people treat computers like social
actors. Example findings include that people will be polite to
computers, reciprocate to computers and respond to flattery
from computers. Such findings have implications for software,
interface and agent design in terms of usability, but more
importantly, affective design.
The seminar will explore the links between usability, affective
design, affective computing and the media equation; review the
media equation literature; discuss the broad implications of
media equation findings; outline a detailed methodology for a
study designed to extend the media equation research; and give
broad detail on a research plan designed to add depth to the
area.
