To answer your questions...
|Kevin:  Were you pulling the CVS tree, or using one of the static 
|uClinux-dist images from snapgear?  If so, which image was it?

I tried a clean cvs download three or four times over a weekend on two
different machines and got the same error message.  I then tried the
distribution, 0408, and it worked fine.  Then, per Jari's input, I
pulled out the before_linux_2_4_26 branch and that worked as well.

This weekend I tried again with the clean checkout and it worked so
either the error was fixed in the tree, or I was doing something wrong
before.  I'm pretty sure I did the exact same thing this time as last
(cut and pasting commands from the online docs), but it is possible I
goofed it up.
