Sounds like you are making good progress now

A few days ago I sent a patch to the mb-uclinux mailing list (and later 
applied to CVS) that "fixes" this.  It uses the on-board timer 
peripheral to generate much finer timing resolution.    Either update 
your kernel sources from cvs, or just grab that patch from the mailing 
list archive and apply it direectly.
