What an adventure that was! It turns out that the problem had nothing to do
with XPS, kernel/dist compilation, etc.
There is an error in the current version of the User Guide / Reference
Manual for this board in Table 21 on Page 19: The "UDQM" and "LDQM" SDRAM
pins are NOT connected to Ground, as the table claims. They are routed to
the FPGA and MUST be driven. I connected them as follows (observing
MicroBlaze's native "big-endian" notation):

The attached *.ZIP file contains my config files, as well as my compiled
"image.bin", which starts at address 0xFE000000. Please, let me know if I've
forgotten any files and I will post them also.
System clock is currently running at 25 MHz.
