Did you update just the kernel (uClinux-2.4.x) or the distribution

Sounds like you've changed or broken something in 
vendors/Xilinx/uclinux-auto or whichever vendors target you are using. 
Certainly no changes in the kernel that would cause this.

Since you previously had a working vendors/XXX/YYY, I suggest you copy 
that old working one into your new uClinux-dist tree.

You can force boot into single user mode by creating a file 
uClinux-dist/romfs/etc/singleboot  - and rerunning make image and 
download to board.
