Hey Jim, just curious, have you selected a MAC/PHY combo yet? I've been
thinking about doing this for the same reason but haven't yet. All the
combo's I have found want a PCI interface which chews up just as much
logic...

Haven't licenced the core - not planning on using it in the final
product: 
will use external MAC/PHY to save room in FPGA for my logic.  I'll have
to 
check if I did a full re-build of the bitstream before my last download
to 
the board, but this sounds like a reasonable explanation.
