Hi Jason,
petalogix 1600 stuff only has bit and bin files, so
cant be used on the 500e based S3e startekit. (and for some reason the image.bin from petalogix doesnt run in XSIM at
all - first terminal prints come but kernel isnt really starting)
your ML401 system - probably good docu, but the
image.bin stalls both in Xilinx VP simulator and in XSIM after "mounting
proc:"
I would stay to stick with the "muranoka" system -
he has fully source code of the S3ESK uClinux ready system and images to use -
those images have been verified to work properly in XSIM, so I belive they are
defenetly ok with real hardware (eg S3E SK) as well

on spartan-3e starter kit
Hi David,
you can follow the Microblaze uClinux
getting stated documentation http://www.itee.uq.edu.au/~wu/downloads/
.
although it targets ml401 board but is broadly applicable to any
BSB-supported.
if you have a spartan3e-1600 board, a reference design
with uClinux image can be found on petalogix's website http://petalogix.com/news_events/Spartan3E-1600
