I used cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonumous@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:/var/cvs co
uClinux-dist but it still took a very long time.

Usually, you should use "cvs -z3 update" to have automatic data compression
for the net transfer. It's the same as if you download a .zip file. AFAIK by
default cvs will transfer without compression.
