I am also interested in an SPI implementation for microblaze uClinux.
I recently bought one of those FTDI VNC1L - Vinculum USB Host
Controllers. It allows for USB flash drive read/write via SPI with
simple commands.
It's pretty inexpensive too. You can find it here:

I am using the Spartan 3E Starter Kit for development:

Unfortunately, I need to develop the motor drivers for the robot
first, but once that is done I will attack the SPI interface.
