Which toolchain are you using?  The one in the default PetaLinux 
distribution supports pattern compare.  Or are you using the toolchain 
downloaded from www.petalogix.com?  They are obsolete - I need to remove 
them.

$ microblaze-uclinux-gcc --target-help
...
  -mxl-pattern-compare      Use pattern compare instructions
...

$ microblaze-uclinux-gcc --v
...
gcc version 3.4.1 ( Xilinx EDK 8.1.01 Build EDK_I.19.4 080506 )
