I have not done this with a MicroBlaze, but I do not believe as a
broad generalization that
romfs is required. On the ppc, I load a single file which is a Linux
kernel and a compressed initramfs
image combined. Linux extracts the intramfs to a ramfs. This is a
2.6 specific solution.
It has some resemblance to initrd, but is actually simpler - though
less well documented.
It is possible that the current PetaLogix/uClinux norms require
romfs and mtd.
Separately, the platform ram mtd driver is fairly minimal and trivial.
