Can you please replace the current test (around line 92 of petalinux-dist/vendors/config/common/config.arch) with the following (all one one line)
LDFLAGS += $(shell if $(CC) -Wl,--fatal-warnings -nostdlib -xc /dev/null -o /tmp/$$$$.out > /dev/null 2>&1; then echo "-Wl,--fatal-warnings"; rm /tmp/$$$$.out; fi;) 

and tell me if it works for you?
