mbvanilla was the very first hardware platform that the early kernel 
port was done on - it is ancient and shouldn't be touched with a 10 foot 
pole!

It was a basic microblaze system with external memory, timer, ethernet 
controller, and maybe a GPIO, I don't quite recall.

It targetted MicroBlaze, not PPC, so it won't help you in that regard.
