The teaching and research in energy systems is supported by sophisticated laboratory facilities, which include:
Machines Laboratory
A rotating machines laboratory equipped with computer controlled data acquisition and a power electronics laboratory equipped with machine drive control facilities to enable convenient studies of the performance of rotating machines and their controllers;
Laboratory Supervisor: Shane Goodwin
Activities: Primarily teaching
Power Systems and Power Quality Laboratory
Computer simulation laboratories with access to advanced simulation software such as PSS/E, Powerworld Simulator, Reliability software (RAP), ATP, DIgSILENT Power Factory, and PSCAD/EMTDC transient simulation packages;
Power Quality- facilities for on-line monitoring of a wide variety of power quality disturbances and equipment for simulating power quality disturbances;
Laboratory Supervisor: Shane Goodwin and ITEE Helpdesk staff.
Activities:
- Teaching in BE and ME Course work
- Research for higher degree students and funded projects
- Undergraduate and ME course work thesis students
- Consulting for industry
Intelligent Plant Diagnostics Laboratory
A well equipped insulation diagnostics laboratory, which is very actively used for insulation degradation and over-stress measurements. This lab includes a lightning impulse voltage generator, single and multiple impulse current generators, 300 kV AC transformer system, Recovery Voltage and Polarisation/Depolarisation Current measurement system, Frequency domain dielectric spectroscopy equipment with HV variable frequency power supply.
Laboratory Supervisor: Steve Wright
Activities:
- Research for higher degree students and funded projects
- Undergraduate and ME course work thesis students
- Consulting for industry
