Professor Tapan Kumar Saha is the leader of the power and energy systems research group. He obtained his PhD in 1994 from the University of Queensland. His research interest includes condition monitoring of electrical equipment, power system stability and control, generation and transmission planning in a market environment and integration of renewable energy to national grid. He has been actively involved with CIGRE Australian Panels and IEEE Queensland Section activities. Currently he is the immediate Past Chair of the IEEE Queensland Section. He is a Fellow of the Engineers Australia and a Senior Member of the IEEE.

A/Prof. Zhao Yang Dong obtained his PhD in Electrical and Information Engineering from The University of Sydney, Australia in 1999. He is now an Associate Professor at the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, The University of Queensland, Australia. His research interest includes power system security assessment and enhancement, electricity market, artificial intelligence and its application in electric power engineering, power system planning and management, and power system stability & control. Dr Nadarajah Mithulananthan has a PhD (Electrical and Computer Engineering) from University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. He is now a Senior Lecturer at the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, The University of Queensland, Australia. His main areas of research interests are analytical studies on electric power grids, power system interconnections, integration of renewable energy into electric power grids and future electric power grids. Mithulan was attached to Energy Field of Study at Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand as an Associate Professor. At AIT, he supervised 51 Masters, 8 doctoral students (including the ongoing ones) and involved in 20 projects with a total budget of 2 million US$, as a principal or co-principal investigator. Based on his research, he published over 60 articles, including referred journal and international conference papers. His previous professional positions include: Planning Engineer at Generation Planning Division for 2 years at Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), Sri Lanka and Project Leader, at the Centre of Excellence in Electric Power Technology (CEEPT) for one year at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand.

Dr Ramesh Bansal received his PhD from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in May 2003 and Master of Engineering (ME) in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems), from Delhi College of Engineering (Delhi University) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Indira Gandhi National Open University. His research interests include Reactive power control analysis, artificial intelligence techniques in power systems, analysis and control of induction generators, renewable energy systems. Dr Bansal joined UQ in July 2008 as a Senior Lecturer (teaching focussed) and is involved in teaching power generation and power/mechatronics related courses.

Honorary Professors

Prof. David Hill received the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Newcastle, Australia, in 1976. He is an honorary professor at the University of Queensland. He is currently a Professor and Australian Research Council Federation Fellow in the Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering at The Australian National University. His research interests are in network systems science, stability analysis, nonlinear control and applications. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, USA and the Australian Academy of Science; he is also a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.

Prof. Ian A. Hiskens is currently Professor in the Dept of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Wisconsin – Madison, USA. He obtained his PhD in 1991 from the University of Newcastle, Newcastle, Australia. His research interest is in Power system analysis; nonlinear and hybrid system dynamics and control; computational techniques for inverse problems. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and Engineers Australia.

Prof. Yousheng Xue received PhD degree from the University of Liege, Belgium in 1987. He is an honorary professor at the University of Queensland. He is a member of the specialist team of State Grid Corporation of China and that of China Southern Power Grid. He has been the Chief Engineer at the Nanjing Automation Research Institute (NARI), China since 1993. His research interest includes power system stability analysis and control. He is Committee Member of the CSEE and CIGRE. He is a Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Adjunct Professors

Dr David Allan received his Doctor of Engineering (Higher Doctorate) from the University of Queensland in 1998. Previously he obtained his Master of Engineering (1991), Bachelor of Economics(1968) and Bachelor of Engineering (1963) all from the University of Queensland. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Queensland. Currently he is the Manager, Research & Development in Powerlink Queensland (Queensland Transmission Network Service Provider). For the last several years he has been responsible for managing Powerlink’s R&D programme, which supports between 25 and 30 projects annually. Prior to this role he held a range of professional and management positions in the electricity supply industry over a career spanning 40 years in total. These ranged from grid planning engineer to substation maintenance engineer to manager of HV and light current testing laboratories and a transformer repair workshop. However, the larger part of his career has been associated with the testing, condition monitoring and life assessment of electrical plant and in research into new techniques in these fields.

Dr Ashok Manglick received his PhD degree from the University of Sydney in 1984. Previously he obtained his B.Tech and M.Tech degrees from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur India in 1972 and 1974 respectively. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Queensland.Dr Manglick is at present Group Manager Strategic Projects in TransGrid (New South Wales Transmission network service provider) responsible for managing complex multidisciplinary projects strategically significant for the business. Until recently he was also a Founding Director and Chief Executive of the Australian Power Institute (the API). Dr Manglick has over 25 years experience in electricity industry and has first hand experience in handling government relations.
