R10 Outstanding Volunteer Award (http://www.ewh.ieee.org/reg/10/Newsletter/2007/R10_eNewsletter-Dec2007.pdf)

The IEEE Region 10 Outstanding Volunteer Award aims to recognize those volunteers who have made outstanding contributions to a particular Region 10 Section. Tapan K Saha of Queensland Section is one of the three winners of the award in 2006. He has played important roles for Queensland Section activities for more than 10 years. Especially he plays an excellent role to coordinate between IEEE and Institution Engineers Australia (IEAust). He also played a driving role in forming the Queensland Student Chapters and GOLD affinity group.

IEEE Queensland Section Best Undergraduate Thesis Award

Power Engineering Alliance Bursary Holder, UQ 5th year Electrical Engineering & Bachelor of Commerce student Sarah Hiley for her Project "Redesign of the Blackwall Static Var Compensator (SVC) Power Oscillation Damper (POD) Controller" won the The IEEE Queensland Section Best Undergraduate Thesis Award in Power Engineering in 2007. Her Supervisors were Paul Windle and Tom Anderson from Powerlink and A/Prof. Zhao Yang Dong from the University of Queensland. Project Summary: The project involved designing and simulating several upgrade options for the Blackwall POD to maximise the damping of power system inter area oscillations on the Queensland to NSW Interconnector (QNI) circuits.

Sarah Hiley’s Award Winning Thesis (Powerlink’s Moving Forward magazine)

Sarah Hiley, Power Engineering student at UQ and PEA Bursary recipient has proven her mettle in the field, and she has been recognised for her innovation. She won the ‘IEEE Queensland Section Best Undergraduate Thesis Award in The field of Power Engineering in 2007’. Her thesis is entitled ‘Redesign of the Blackwall Static Var Compensator (SVC) Power Oscillation Damper (POD) Controller.’ “The project involved designing and simulating several upgrade options for the Blackwall POD to maximise the damping of power system inter-area oscillations on the Queensland to NSW Interconnector (QNI) circuits,” Sarah explained. “The POD at Blackwall on the Middle Ridge to Greenbank augmentation rendered the old POD ineffective. The observability of the QNI mode in the original power input of the POD was significantly decreased, so I had to redesign the POD using a different input signal.”

“It was a great honour to win the award. I was thankful for the opportunity to do the thesis at Powerlink. I found the project interesting, challenging and rewarding. I want to thank my supervisors Paul Windle and Tom Anderson at Powerlink, and Dr Zhao Yang Dong at University of Queensland.” “At first they didn’t think it would work, but it all worked in the end, I was able to go out and saw it installed and tested and it worked! It was awesome,” she said. Congratulations Sarah! Thank you to Sarah Hiley for your contribution.
