Managing Video tapes/clips, etc.
These are some thoughts on things that maybe we should do to manage our rapidly growing collection of video tapes:- JaredDonovan.
Labelling Tapes
All tapes should be labelled in a consistent way. My suggestion is to name the tape by [date][Description of contents], eg. 18-07-02_Brett Tim Dentist Visit. This should be done as soon as possible after shooting the video. I think it's important to include the date in the title so we can look back through our journals and locate written notes we might have made about the visit, such as field notes and also things like phone numbers & addresses for informants.
I don't think names like 'Pineapple sessions' are a good idea. ( Go on BenMcGarry DEFEND YOURSELF ).
As a matter of course...
As a matter of course, we should make a time-log for every tape and use this to select 10 clips from every tape so we can build up a library of short clips that can be used for things like the video card game etc. The clips should be converted to mpeg & stored together in a folder along with the batch capture file from premiere. That way if we need to get high quality versions it's easy to do so. The folder should be named the same as the tape, e.g. 18-07-02_Brett_Tim_Dentist_Visit with spaces converted to underscores.
We should do this as soon as possible after shooting the video. That way we reflect back on the video while the experience of the visit is still fresh. Otherwise we must question why we are bothering to tape video at all. Having a selection of short clips makes it a lot easier to get a quick feel for the type of information contained on the video.
Importing Clips with Software
When importing the tapes, we should take the time to write down the full name of the tape into the batch capture, so if we want to run the capture again we can find which tape it was more easily. This is another incentive to agree on a standard naming system.
The file names chosen for the 10 clips should follow the format, 00-person_does_thing, as used in the video card game. Underscores should be used instead of spaces. We should continue to number the clips sequentially, ( we're up to 70 at the moment. )
Storing Clip Files
To save space on the computers we should burn each of the clip-folders onto a CD. Name the CD the same as the folder and tape, and store it with the tapes. 10 clips per CD means 60Mb per clip. I think the mpeg versions of the clips we've been producing are about 10-15Mb, so maybe we could fit more than one folder on a CD. In this case the CD would have all of the folders names listed as contents.
