So far we have conducted three field studies. Our aim was to familiarise ourselves with dental practice, particularly with information handling apsects of the work ( how the patient record is updated ). The understanding gained from the field studies will inform the design of technology to aid in updating the patient record.
At the moment our notes are organised by date.

Field Study 1 You have a good grasp of what goes on congratulations. You need to clarify your terminology of student , dentist, supervisor as they are a bit confusing at times. Disoposables such as saliva ejectors etc are discarded. Sickle Probe. Students shouldn't need to change gloves that often if they are organised. Jenny
Thanks for your input Jenny. As we put up new notes we'll use:
Dentist A = workspace #1
Dentist B = workspace #2
Demonstrator
Assistant
in order to avoid any confusion and we'll go back and adjust field study 1 accordingly. Brett
I think that the point about gloves changes being related to organisation is an interesting one. Going back a little bit I worked for a number of years in the hospitality industry preparing/serving food etc. We had to wear gloves all of the time when working with food, the difference here being that we were trying to prevent germs from getting across onto the food whereas in the dental surgery the aim is to keep patient germs from getting across to the dentist. Whenever we would wear gloves we always had to change them every 15mins so we were working with fresh gloves, regardless of where we were up to with preparing the meal. So the idea of changing gloves regularly seemed pretty natural to me. So, are glove changes purely related to organisation or do other factors come into it as well?
Another difference I suppose is that when working with food, after a period of 15mins the gloves will tend to get quite dirty, justifying the change. This isn't really an issue in the surgery because after 15mins the dentist will still be clean. Brett
