What is a wiki?

A wiki is a kind of website where anyone can edit the pages. The original wiki is at c2.com/cgi/wiki . There's lots of information about wikis there.

( Note: the wiki at c2.com is much more complex than this one and there are some differences in WikiFormat rules. )

To edit a wiki page you click on the [Edit] link at the bottom of each page. When you do this you get a new page with a text-box where you can edit and save the content of the page.

There are simple rules for how to format the text, ( e.g Bold or Italic ) see the WikiFormat page for full details.

Wiki Page Names

Wiki page names have a standard format of captitalised first letter joined together, ( e.g. 'test page' becomes TestPage ). There must be at least two words in the title, ( i.e. 'Test' and 'Page' are not titles but TestPage is ).
Tip: The wiki expects the capital letters to be separated by lowercase letters so a name like ThisIsAPage will not be recognised. Instead, type the A in lowercase like this, ThisIsaPage.

Creating links between wiki pages

You may have noticed that the titles of the wiki pages all follow a standard format of at least two words joined together with the first letter in captials, ( for example a page called 'test page' would become TestPage ).

The wiki automatically recognises this pattern when you type it in your text and turns it into a hyperlink. For example, if you wanted to create a link to the front page of this wiki you just have to type FrontPage and the wiki will do the rest.

Adding a new page

One of the best things about wikis is how easy it is to add new pages. To do this you;

  1. Find a page you'd like to link to your new page from.
  2. Edit the text of the page and type in the title of your new page, ( note: just the title, not the whole text ).
  3. Save the page and wait to go back to the normal view.
  4. Because the page is not in the wiki yet it will be formatted with a trailing question mark ( e.g. ThisIsNotaPage ).
  5. You can then click the question mark and you'll get an edit box where you can type the text for your new page and save it.

I'm Lost!

It can be easy to get lost amongst all these pages, so at the bottom of the page are some basic navigation links. On the left are links to the front page, [FrontPage] and an index of all pages, [ListAllPages]. On the right is a text box where you can type in the name of a page to go to.
