Optimum Discrete Coefficient Realization of FIR Filters
Speaker: Dr Wei-Yong Yan, Curtin University of Technology
When: 03.15PM, Wednesday 05 Feb 2003
Venue: 78-420
Host: Associate Professor Brian Lovell
Abstract:
Most existing FIR filter design methods are based on infinite precision arithmetic and thus lead to filters which cannot be readily implemented with microprocessors. Such infinite precision filters have to be transformed into finite precision filters using techniques such as coefficient quantization and rounding before they can be implemented with hardware. Among finite precision filters, FIR filters whose coefficients are restricted to a sum of signed powers of two are particularly attractive as they can be implemented without using any multipliers, which often greatly contribute to the cost and complexity. In this seminar, the problem of optimal approximation of a given FIR filter by a filter with discrete coefficients will be discussed. An analytic approach to the problem will be described.
