Certification Issues for Emulation of Legacy Mission Computer Systems
Speaker: Dr Colin Fidge, ITEE
When: 10.00AM, Friday 04 Apr 2003
Venue: 78-420
Host: Dr Colin Fidge
Abstract:
Processor obsolescence is a serious technical and economic problem for long-lived computer control systems such as those found in military aircraft. Processor emulation offers a potential solution by interposing an interpreter between old "legacy" software and a new processor. The School is currently undertaking consultancy for the Defence Science and Technology Organisation on the airworthiness certification issues associated with using processor emulation in avionics systems. This talk introduces the legacy software problem, describes the emulation solution, and summarises our conclusions to date about the relevance of existing airworthiness certification standards.
