Low Power Wireless AD-HOC Networking

Speaker: Wai How Michael Woo, ITEE

Abstract:

The designs of low power wireless system have gained increasing
importance for a variety of civil and military applications. Such
example is the development of Bluetooth and more recently the
research and development of Ultra-Wideband Transmission Systems. At
this stage, these two wireless systems are still quite expensive and
it has not been used as a day-to-day item in a house. These low
power wireless micro sensor networks will enable the reliable
monitoring of a variety of applications that range from medical and
home security to machine diagnosis and chemical detection. It should
also be easily integrated to another application.

Networking together these low power micro sensors requires energy
efficient protocols. Some work has already been done around this
area such as LEACH (Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy). More
research can be done around this area to improve the power
  efficiency of a wireless system.

In this seminar, I will be presenting how it is possible to design a
low power wireless embedded system with the combination of low power
hardware and energy efficient protocol. I will also be comparing
different wireless system that is currently in the market.
