Extensible Modelling and
Coordination of Enterprise Workflows

During the past few years, workflow technology has emerged as a flexible and appropriate environment to develop and maintain process-oriented enterprise-wide information systems. On the basis of our past research and experience, we believe there is still a need to overcome certain shortcomings in existing workflow technology to bring it closer to meet enterprise process management requirements. In this project, we are exploring and developing solutions to some of these inter-related problems.

Essentially, we are attempting to achieve the following inter-dependent goals during the course of this project:

  • Develop an extensible workflow modelling framework that provides flexibility to workflow designers in specifying a variety of enterprise processes.
  • Explore new ways to support verification and validation of workflow models to identify problems and errors in process models before putting them use.
  • Provide infrastructure for dynamic modification of active workflow instances to introduce flexibility and adaptability in restrictive coordinative workflow technology.
  • Investigate new techniques for workflow monitoring and visualization to effectively manage the execution of workflow instances.
  • Build advanced research prototypes to demonstrate the applicability and usefulness of the results achieved and to provide a foundation for speedy commercialisation.
