System Development Methods in the “Real World”

System Development Methods in the “Real World”

Speaker: Rolf Pfotenhauer, Jupiter's

When: 10:00, Monday, 2 August 2004

Venue: 78-420

A few decades ago SDM's were at the forefront of business investment in new technology. Today most organisations view clear and efficient business processes as their primary objective for achieving corporate goals. Corporations go to considerable trouble and expense to put processes such as BPR, Six Sigm™, Balanced Scorecard and CMM into practice.

The question is: with the availability of fast, open and scaleable processing systems why are SDM's out of favour? Could it be that there are pre and post conditions that are missing with orthodox ‘traditional’ Systems Development Methods (SDM’s)?

This research-in-progress seminar will examine the deficiencies of ‘real world’ system development methodologies such as UML, JSP, SSADM, SADT, and the like. We are not going to present yet another methodology (YAM); but examine the bridge between method and the tools that support them in the real world.
