Topic:

Searching Concept Spaces using Physical Navigation Strategies

Supervisors:

Dr Andrew Smith

Prof Janet Wiles

Abstract:

Concept space can be vast and complex, and the amount of information available in electronic form is continuing to increase rapidly with the expansion of the Internet. Tools that are able to provide pathways between concepts in large or unknown corpora of text can give insight into their relationship that may be difficult to comprehend or interpret manually.

The techniques used to navigate physical space may also be used to navigate conceptual space. Tasks such as exploration, navigation of a pathway and finding the best pathway can be applied to conceptual space from the physical analogy. The exploration of a conceptual space can provide the shape of the landscape, evidence of causality, or to find required information such as prerequisite concepts when learning a new domain. A "knowledge pathway" within a conceptual space is the way in which concepts that are not directly associated within a domain may be linked.

The overall goal of this project is to investigate using pathways in conceptual space as a means for identifying causal or prerequisite links between concepts. The specific aims are to develop and test a mechanism for decomposing and representing a pathway in a textual domain that can then be interpreted as a knowledge pathway. This pathway can be used to aid in learning new concepts from a known starting point, or to determine if there is a credible link between two concepts.

Expected outcomes for this project include a form of abstract or guided tutorial based on a text corpus from an origin concept to a goal concept, and visualisations that can help to understand the relationships between concepts that are not directly associated. Future work that can be based on the representations developed during this project include tools to aid in learning new concepts from a priori knowledge, and techniques that may be applied to domain learning in intelligent agents.
