SCIE1000

For those interested in tutoring a general science course...

SCIE1000 (Theory and Practice in Science) aims to teach all BSc (Bachelor of Science) students some useful quantitive skills in the context of solving problems in science. The course will be recommended in study plans across all majors in the BSc, hence a large class size is anticipated.

Therefore, a team of willing and able tutors is required to conduct weekly tutorial sessions, carry out marking and student consultation.

SCIE1000 will develop and apply mathematical modelling techniques that are important to problems across a range of scientific discipline areas. A key component of tutorials will involve the students implementing scientific models and solving problems by writing programs in the python language.

Suitable candidates for tutoring in SCIE1000 would be later year students with knowledge sufficient to cover the mathematical, computing or science content of the course (you will not be expected to be an expert across all of these areas). It is anticipated that a special SCIE1000 induction/training workshop will be held for SCIE1000 tutors sometime in February, in addition to generic tutor training for new tutors at UQ.

If you are interested in tutoring for SCIE1000, as well as completing the above online tutor application form, please send an email to Dr Marcus Gallagher (marcusg@itee.uq.edu.au) to record your interest.

It would also be helpful to attach a brief CV and/or to indicate which aspect(s) of the course (computing, maths, some specific science discipline) you feel that you are suitable to tutor. Appointments will be made in January and February 2009.
