Master of Data Science at UQ

The Master of Data Science program at UQ is the most comprehensive of its kind in Australia, combining high-level analytical and technical skills with industry specific knowledge. It is open to students from a range of backgrounds (including computer science, IT, mathematics, statistics, engineering, physics) and offers both a 2 year program, as well as an accelerated 18 month degree.

 

No need to start with the basics. Study advanced topics from computing, statistics and mathematics, as well as your choice of electives from business, finance, health, or science, applied to complex data-intensive challenges.

  • Introduction to Data Science

    DATA7001 is the first course that all data science students will take when they start their program. The course actually acts as a preamble to various advanced courses in the remainder of the program.

    Assumed Knowledge

    Completion of Queensland Year 12 or equivalent Mathematics B and a 3-year undergraduate degree with a major in computer science, IT, statistics, mathematics, engineering, or a program with substantial quantitative competencies.

  • Responsible Data Science

    In this course students will critically analyse the ethical and legal foundations of data science governance that are relevant to the technical processes of data collection, storage, exchange and access.

    Assumed Knowledge

    No prior knowledge of ethics or law is assumed, however it is expected that students would have completed DATA7001 before taking this course.

  • Data Analytics at Scale

    In this course we will give students knowledge about modern scale-out system architectures to perform data analytics queries over very large structured/unstructured datasets.

    Assumed Knowledge

    Students taking this course should already be familiar Bash scripts, Python, and SQL.

  • Statistical Methods for Data Science

    This course covers a variety of advanced statistical methods such as generalised linear models, time series models and process simulation.

    Assumed Knowledge

    Students taking this course should be familiar with mathematics and applied probability and statistics.

    The course allows students to develop knowledge and skills in machine learning techniques which are in high demand in industry for data science and data analytics positions.

  • Data Science Capstone Project 1

    The capstone project will enable students to bring together their analytical and interpretive skills to execute an end-to-end data science project in a real-life setting.
